Bio

My name is Ashley Elizabeth Wheeler, I am a Toronto-based artist and a student at OCAD. I major in drawing and painting and minor in printmaking. I grew up in Scarborough, however I have moved several times – each time to a new area of the city (High Park, Rouge Hill, Regent Park, Downtown core, and Forest Hill). I love getting to know different regions by exploring (walking, cycling,TTC), and by engaging with the different types of communities that make the city rich and diverse.

My work has been described as illustrative, humorous, personal, imaginative, beautiful and curious… Sometimes these elements happen all at once and sometimes only one at a time. I have had both success and failure when trying to present an image or an idea – both outcomes are equally meaningful and have revealed some of the many challenges of the creative process.

Motivation

Snow Days appeals to me for many reasons – I am fascinated by human nature, and how it affects our relationships with ourselves and others; how experience can change our mood, our thoughts, and our behavior, and how the many elements of perception connect to one another and shape our lives – and through us influence the lives of others. Self-reflection is a concept that can mean different things to different people. The way in which I reflect is likely to be different from the next person. It can take on many forms, and the impact can be great or small. To relate it to something as natural as weather is very interesting to me. How does climate play a role in this?

I would like to share my thoughts with others to enrich my practice as an artist and as an open-minded individual willing to bear my own most personal insights for the sake of an enriching learning experience.
